Important Tips for Choosing Travel Insurance

Many people like to put off, or even ignore, the need for travel insurance. While that is certainly understandable (none of us really want to think of things going wrong), it is unwise.

Choosing effective travel insurance can also be confusing and even frustrating. Hopefully the following tips will help you navigate this necessary purchase with the least amount of stress.

1. Give yourself lots of time.
Purchasing travel insurance is something that you shouldn’t leave to the last minute. Yes, we all hate to spend extra money right after we’ve committed to the cost of a vacation, but buying it early is usually the best policy. Most will cover cancellations, so if you need to cancel this holiday that you’ve just booked – you’re covered.

2. Single Trip Coverage vs Annual Coverage
If you plan to take more than one vacation, or trip, this year, then look into annual coverage. You may find that, in the long run, it’s cheaper than covering each trip individually.

3. Your personal health insurance may not cover you.
Don’t assume that just because you have medical insurance in your home country that it will cover you when traveling to other countries. More often than not, it doesn’t. Check with your insurance provider to be sure and so that you know exactly what coverage you will need when you travel.

4. Disclose any pre-existing conditions.
Most people like to try to avoid this, thinking that it will seriously increase the travel insurance premium they’ll need to pay. It might. However, if you don’t disclose this information then the insurance company may deny any claims. It’s best to be honest and not take the chance of any claim not being honored.

5. Make sure you get the right policy for you.
There are different policies for different types of holidays. If you plan an adventure-type vacation that includes things like backpacking, skiing, mountain climbing and the like, then you need a policy that will cover you if you have an accident while participating in these activities.

6. Consider a family policy.
If you’re traveling as a family, then get family travel insurance coverage. You may find that some policies will cover any family member under 18 years old for free.

7. Be sure that you understand exactly what you’re covered for.
Read the policy coverage before signing on the dotted line and parting with your hard-earned cash. If the premium amount seems too good to be true – it probably is.

8. If you’re under the influence of drugs or alcohol, you won’t be covered.
Although this should go without saying, it’s best to say it. No insurance company will cover you for an accident if you where under the influence of drugs or alcohol when the accident occurs.

All in all, just use your common sense when researching and buying travel medical insurance. Know what you’re getting. Know what coverage you’ve chosen. Then, enjoy your vacation!
